Why 12 grapes for the New Year?

As Every year on December 31we all make a list of purposes and wishes that we hope to accomplish for the next year. At the stroke of 12 o'clock at night, by tradition, we eat 12 grapes with each ring of the bell, with the hope that, now, in the new year that begins, we can fulfill all our desires.

But where does this beautiful tradition come from? This is of Spanish origin and has been made since the beginning of the 20th century. It emerged as a way for winegrowers in the regions of Murcia and Alicante to get rid of the surplus of grapes that had occurred in 1909.

Traditionally, the grape is a fruit that it is usually associated with positive symbols such as brotherhood, unity , joy and pleasure or spirituality. It is said that the twelve grapes represent the 12 months of the year to come and these are eaten at 12 midnight with the 12 bells, one for each bell and in each of these grapes we represent the wishes or purposes that we want to fulfill in the following year. Likewise, they represent a sign of prosperity for the next year that is about to begin.
